Korowai was the first neighbourhood within Prestons. The name Korowai refers to the highly valued traditional cloaks, symbolic of leadership and the commensurate obligation to care for people and their environment. By adopting this name, we laid the kaupapa (foundation) for the entire development as we looked to contribute positively to Canterbury’s ‘post-earthquake’ climate.

Harakeke is one of New Zealand’s oldest plant species and can be found growing throughout the country. The first European traders called it ‘flax’. Harakeke is an appropriate name for this neighbourhood given a number of taonga (treasured) harakeke varieties that have been planted within the large wetland at the northern tip of Prestons. Harakeke was hugely important to Māori. Each pā or marae typically had a harakeke plantation. Clothing, mats, plates, baskets, ropes, bird snares, lashings, fishing lines, and nets were all made from Harakeke.
