Land stability

When building a new home, a common question we receive is about the land and its stability in the event of another earthquake. We’ve done extensive testing across the whole of Prestons for your peace of mind. 

Land stability:

Prestons suffered no liquefaction or lateral spreading or any other seismically associated hazards during the entire earthquake series.

The site has a low susceptibility to earthquake damage because of the presence of dense dune deposits. These dense dune sands are less susceptible to liquefaction than fluvial deposits found around rivers and streams.

Aurecon identified some small areas of thin peat layers through their investigations and these were removed. 

Subsequent test results were provided to the Christchurch City Council as part of the subdivision’s certification approval.

Geo-technical Reports

Extensive ground tests undertaken before the development began by Aurecon New Zealand Ltd found most of the land in Prestons is TC1. 

Some small, localised areas were identified as being TC2. Ground improvement work was carried out on these isolated areas in 2012 during the first stage of the development. This work comprised ground densification with a large compactor, which has improved the future ground performance of those areas to a TC1 level. 

The work was subject to stringent quality assurance and control testing to confirm that the ground improvement to TC1 was achieved.
