Kairua, located on Wilmers Road in Hornby, is a 5.3 hectare industrial park with 31 lots. Situated within the well-established Hornby South industrial and commercial precinct, sites within this development sold out quickly.

Well-positioned for easy transport access to the Christchurch CBD, Christchurch International Airport, Lyttleton Port, and the primary north and south transit links out of Christchurch, Kairua suited an array of businesses, including construction, warehousing, manufacturing, logistics support, storage and vehicle services.

The development provided freehold land opportunities for owner/operators and investors to design and build facilities to meet their operational and investment needs.

Significance of the name Kairua

Wilmers Road is located on former native grasslands/pākihi that were straddled by the headwaters of the Halswell and Heathcote rivers. It is also adjacent to a former riverbed that was an ancient course of the Waimakariri River. In 1868 Hapukuku Kairua, a leading chief from Kaiapoi, made a claim to lands in the Hornby/Halswell area extending to the Landsdowne Valley and Tai Tapu. This area contained rich mahinga kai-food and resource gathering and was significant within the overall network of kāinga mahinga kai used by Ngāi Tahu people. The claim was dismissed because the land had already been alienated by the Crown. This claim was given further credence as the descendants and relatives of Hapukuku later imparted mahinga kai knowledge as part of the 1879 Smith Nairn Commission enquiry into Te Kereme, the Ngāi Tahu claim. The Ngāi Tahu Property development at Wilmers Road provides an opportunity to further acknowledge the rangatiratanga and claim of Hapakuku Kairua to the area.

As an iwi-owned company Ngai Tahu Property are committed to working with mana whenua in every area we operate. We are serious in our desire to support the use of Te Reo Māori throughout Aotearoa and to help reinstate indigenous names and narratives into the landscape. We always take time and effort to get the naming of our developments right. Importantly, Ngāi Tahu Property does not hold any copyright on our use of these kupu taonga and respects the significance and mana of all names to the mana whenua and to Māori nationally.
